Beautiful Place by the Sea
From its obscure beginnings as a small fishing village dotted with shacks and sturdy New England dories beached on its marshy, barren fields to escape the grasp of the wild Atlantic, the far-sightedness of its founding fathers who, for future generations, stubbornly preserved its 3 1/2mile stretch of pristine white sand beach, the magnificent and exhilarating Marginal Way, a winding footpath which shadows the craggy, rock-bound coastline for more than a mile, the now picturesque harbor of Perkins Cove, where fishing and pleasure boats move easily at their moorings, and one of the only draw-footbridges in the country spans its entrance, the quaint New England flavor of the Village Center, a bustling holiday haven to visitors from all over the world, Ogunquit today remains a tranquil, small village that continues to offer almost everything to almost everyone as perhaps nowhere else in the country can. Its countless variety of fine shops, excellent restaurants and lodgings; art galleries, museums, the Playhouse and summer repertory theatres; nearby golf courses and country clubs; fishing, lobstering and sight-seeing cruises, and spectacular views year-round would be difficult to encounter anywhere else. Over the past 100 years, this charming seaside village has evolved from a small fishing hamlet with dirt roads and shacks, to a major vacation resort without losing its charisma or magnetism. This little "gem" on the rocky coast of Maine shouldn't be missed.
